Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Rhu Seaplane Base, Argyll & Bute This aerial photograph shows the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment (MAEE) which was transferred to Helensburgh in 1939. Two seaplanes can be seen in the bay, while three others stand on a landing platform in the centre of the photograph. At the beginning of World War II, the MAEE transferred their operations from Felixstowe to Rhu. As their name suggests, their remit was to test new types of seaplanes, with particular regard to their effectiveness for dropping depth charges. During World War II, at least five captured seaplanes were given to the MAEE and were examined here. With the end of hostilities in 1945, the MAEE closed their station at Rhu and returned to Felixstowe. Taken during aerial reconnaissance in March 1941, this Luftwaffe intelligence photograph shows Rhu Seaplane Base. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
