Scope and Content Saltcoats Town-house, North Ayrshire Saltcoats Town-house was built by a group of inhabitants who 'felt great inconvenience' because of the need for a clock and a lock-up 'for disorderly persons', and that a burgh needed a steeple as an 'ornament'. Funding came from public subscription. The belfry and spire were reduced in height during the 20th century. The Town Hall was completed in 1892 to serve the new police burgh which had been created in 1885 and took over the Town-house from the Town House Society in 1891.
