Scope and Content Cast-iron wall ties, Ardbeg Distillery, Islay, Argyll Ardbeg Distillery was founded in the late 18th century by Alexander Stewart, but is first recorded in operation in 1817-18. Rods connected to wall ties brace the walls of the malt barn, helping to support the extra weight of the wet barley on the malting floors within. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
