Scope and Content Cromarty Court-house, Highland Cromarty Court-house accommodated the county and burgh councils. It was built by George Ross, owner of the Cromarty estate. The cell block was added in the 1840s. The front of the court-house has hardly changed since it was built. The mercat cross was moved to its grounds from the old tolbooth. It is inscribed with the dates 1378 and 1773 or 1778, and also the initials of George Ross who had it moved. The court-house became too expensive to run and it was closed in 1872. It later became a police lock-up, and at one time was used by the navy. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
