Scope and Content Newton Stewart Town-house, Dumfries and Galloway Newton Stewart Town-house was probably built to cope with the 'amazing' expansion of Newton Stewart, a planned village developed out of a burgh of barony founded in 1771 by William Stewart of Castle Stewart. The ground-floor window-sills are not original. As built, all three arches were probably open, forming an arcade for a market. The entrance in the base of the steeple leads to stairs to the first floor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
