Scope and Content Kirkcudbright Tolbooth, Dumfries and Galloway Kirkcudbright Tolbooth was paid for by local landowners and from fines. Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar also loaned £2000 to be repaid from council rents and selling booths in the new tolbooth. It was replaced in 1788 because it was too small. The mercat cross was made in 1610 and moved to the top of the forestair in 1760. The weather-vane is a model of a sailing-ship probably made to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. It replaced one brought from the Netherlands in 1646. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
