Scope and Content Main Hall, Easterbrook Hall, Crichton Royal Hospital, Bankend Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway, from west Crichton Royal Hospital was founded in 1839 with a bequest of £100,000 from Dr James Crichton (1765-1823), who had made a fortune trading in India and China. The asylum expanded rapidly promoting progressive and enlightened theories in the care and treatment of the mentally ill. This shows the main recreational hall, with seating for 1,000 people, in Easterbrook Hall, planned by Dr Easterbrook, Physician Superintendent from 1908 to 1937. He had travelled widely to pick up ideas on the latest recreational and therapeutic facilities available for treatment of the mentally ill. Under the leadership of Dr James Rutherford (1883-1907) and Dr Charles Easterbrook (1908-37), Crichton Royal Hospital expanded rapidly. Projects included the construction of a farm steading with residential accommodation, a generating station to provide the hospital with its own electricity, and a church.
