Scope and Content Hoddom Castle, Dumfriesshire Hoddom Castle began as a tower-house in 1568 and had many changes and additions over the centuries. The original tower-house was built by John Maxwell, 4th Lord Herries, as his main residential stronghold on the West March. The tower-house was a large structure for its date, being over 21.3m high and with walls which were 2.7m thick at the base. It was attacked three times by the English during the early years of its existence. Hoddom is an example of a tower-house which was extended at a later date to form a mansion. Most of these buildings were then demolished between 1953-75 but traces of their rooflines can be seen on the walls of the original block. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
