Scope and Content View of New Abbey Parish Church, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. The heavy buttresses on the medieval nave (left) were added c.1620 to strengthen the walls. William Burn's Neo-Gothic parish church (right) was added in 1818-21. The words 'King Robert The Bruce' are incorporated into the tower's openwork balustrade. Since King Malcolm III married his queen, Margaret (later canonised to become St Margaret), in Dunfermline c.1070, the burgh has been popular with royalty. Many monarchs have been buried here, including Malcolm and Margaret, and King Robert the Bruce. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
