Scope and Content Detail of linkage unit, including later suspension system of Union Suspension Bridge, Hutton, Berwickshire Union Suspension Bridge was built in 1820 by Captain S Brown, engineer, and was Scotland's first suspension bridge. It was strengthened in 1902-3 by J A Bean, engineer. The deck is supported by iron-rod suspenders. These are connected to the cables slung between the monumental dressed-stone pylons at each end. Each cable consists of three pairs of chains, each chain being made up of linked rods. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
