Scope and Content Auchtermuchty Town-House, Fife Auchtermuchty Town-House was built in 1728 after the burgh council decided they needed a 'good tolbooth with a clock and bell and steeple for containing the same'. It was paid for by borrowing from local tradesmen and the kirk session. The burgesses enlarged the windows of the first-floor council chamber, added a surround to the main entrance, and probably blocked the window on the right of the picture. They also replaced the burgh bell with one made in London in 1874. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
