Scope and Content Early 20th-century view of The Cross, Auchtermuchty, Fife The Cross was originally a market place centred on the now-vanished mercat cross [?] and is now the site of most of the burgh's important structures. A war memorial built 1919-20 stands in the market place. Designed by Reginald Fairlie, it houses the figure of a soldier carved by Alexander Carrick. On its right, resembling a church, is the early 18th-century Town-house where the council met. Auchtermuchty, a small royal burgh since 1517, developed into a minor industrial centre after an iron foundry and linen works were built there at the end of the 18th century.
