Scope and Content Implements from kippering-house on Albert Street, Pultneytown, Wick, Caithness The kippering-house on Albert Street in Wick is typical of its type. Though not well preserved, it does have a good example of a kipper-kiln. Originally the plant had four two-void kilns. The baskets were for measuring out the oak chips to feed the kiln fires. The herrings were hooked onto the tentering-sticks and placed in the kiln voids to smoke. The wire tray was used for drying the herrings during the preparation process. [?a guess] The smoking process took six to twelve hours. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
