Scope and Content Douglas Arms on mercat cross, Inverkeithing, Fife Inverkeithing became a royal burgh in the 12th century. Its economy was based on trade. A new distillery and ironworks saved it from decline in the late 18th century. Its key 20th-century industries were papermaking and ship-building and breaking. The heart with three stars is the Douglas family coat-of-arms - one of four heraldic shields possibly marking the wedding of King Robert III's heir, David, Duke of Rothesay to Mary Douglas in 1398.
