Scope and Content Deer larder, Guisachan, Highland, from south Dating from 1860, this huge courtyard steading was designed by A & W Reid & Mackenzie for Lord Tweedmouth who bought Guisachan estate from William Fraser of Culbokie in 1854. Guisachan House is now a ruin, but the farm, which includes a picturesque dairy, and the model village of Tomich, are still standing. This is the deer larder viewed from the south, which is today used as an oil store. At one time deer were slaughtered in the right-hand section of the building. A winch to lift the carcasses still exists in the left-hand part of the building and the interior is lined with white tiles for hygiene purposes. The building is still used as a deer larder though the air vents have been removed. Stalking has always been popular on the estate. In her 'Musings of a Scottish Granny', Lady Aberdeen wrote 'how the contingents of stalkers would move over to Affric Lodge to work the forest and my elder brother woud often be settled there with his friends from Oxford.'
