Scope and Content Clock-tower, Guisachan, Highland, from north-east Dating from 1860, this huge courtyard steading was designed by A & W Reid & Mackenzie for Lord Tweedmouth who bought Guisachan estate from William Fraser of Culbokie in 1854. Guisachan House is now a ruin, but the farm, which includes a picturesque dairy, and the model village of Tomich, are still standing. This is the clock-tower, seen here from the north-east, built over the pend and flanked by cart sheds and stables. Each side of the tower has a round-headed, louvred window linked to each other by a cill-band and under jerkin-headed dormers. The piended slate roof is topped by the small square clock-tower and a weathervane. It is sometimes said that the Frasers sold Guisachan unwillingly. A dinner party was held by William Fraser at which the future Lord Tweedmouth was a guest. The former rashly stated that 'if anyone gave me £60,000 for Guisachan I would sell it tomorrow.' The latter replied 'Done' and when Fraser tried to explain that the remark had not been taken seriously Tweedmouth said 'a gentleman's word is his bond' and the sale was completed.
