Scope and Content View from south-west of entrance front of Castlecliffe, The Scores, St Andrews, Fife This large house which overlooks the sea, was built in 1869 to designs by architect David Bryce (1803-76). It is two-storeyed with a raised basement level, and is built from bull-faced ashlar stone with polished dressings. It is presently used by the Economics department of the University of St Andrews. This shows the house covered in scaffolding whilst undergoing restoration work. The striking conservatory (right) shelters the entrance staircase. The house has crowstepped gables and a circular turret (left) with a conical roof. This house is designed in the Scots Baronial style, which takes as its inspiration the architectural details found on traditional tower-houses. The strength and power of this style expresses the idea of ancient family estates and wealth, which made it very popular in the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
