Scope and Content Number 4 Bank Street, Inverkeithing, Fife Number 4 Bank Street was built in 1617 for John Thomson. The house bears two inscriptions, one over the entrance to the stair-tower, and one above the central window of the main block. The triangular pediment over the stair-tower entrance bears an inscription from Psalm 137: EXCEPT THE LORD BVLD THE HOVS THEY LABOUR IN VAINE THAT BVILD IT. In old inscriptions: depending on its position the letter 'V' often stands for 'U'; and the spelling is usually very different from modern practice. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
