Scope and Content View of fireplace in drawing room of Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, Inverness Achnagairn House was built c.1800, with additions and alterations 1905-10 by architect William Laidlaw Carruthers (d.1914). He added a service block and huge ballroom which turned the U-plan house to a square of buildings with a central courtyard. This shows the c.1810 fireplace with its Neo-Classical design of maidens and scrolls, supported by Corinthian columns. The central oval painting may depict a figure representing 'Vanity'. Delft tiles make up the hearth. The grate and surround are c.1910. This fireplace echoes the changing fashions seen in the decoration of the rest of the house. The simple lines of the shiny metalwork contrast with the delicate reliefs and painted details popular 100 years before. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
