Scope and Content View from south-east of Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, Inverness Achnagairn House was built in c.1800 and re-designed 1905-10 in the Arts and Crafts style. It began as a U-plan house which was then converted into a square range of buildings with a central court by architect William Laidlaw Carruthers (d.1914). This shows the house from the gardens. Stone steps lead up to the white-painted, harled stone house with its twin towers with curved, slated roofs. The bays next to them have crow-stepped gables, and there is an additional angled bay (left). This grand house was redesigned to include a ballroom for entertaining the large numbers of people at the house parties so popular at the turn of the 19th/20th century. A large staff of servants would be required to attend to the guests and family. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
