Scope and Content Station Hotel and Number 8 to 10, Academy Street, Inverness, Highland Inverness expanded rapidly in the 19th century following construction of the Caledonian Canal (begun in 1804) and connection to the rail network (1855). Its main industries at that period were ship-building, iron founding and saw-milling. Station Hotel (left) was begun in about 1855 by Joseph Mitchell but completed in Italian style by Matthews and Lawrie in 1858-9. Number 8 to 10 was built as the town residence of the Mackintoshes of Aberarder in 1812. The shop front dates from about 1900. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
