Scope and Content Chambered cairn known as the Calf of Eday Long, Eday, Orkney This is the Calf of Eday long cairn. It is now in a rather ruinous and overgrown state though two chambers are still visible. It is a multi-period monument and was excavated in 1936. This is a plan of the cairn. The earliest part was the small rounded chamber with two compartments which was covered by a small cairn. Later, the longer chamber with its compartments was built. A larger rectangular cairn was built covering both chambers. The cairn was excavated in 1936. Sherds of Unstan pottery, flint tools and two stone axes were found in the longer chamber. No bones were recovered, due to the soil conditions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
