Scope and Content North wing, Skelbo Farm steading, Highland Skelbo Farm steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. By 1829, 36 lowland mixed farms had been created mostly along the coastal strip between Bonar Bridge and Helmsdale. Skelbo was one of these estate 'improvements' and in 1853 it was completely rebuilt. This is the north wing of the steading viewed from the north-east with a granary on the upper floor. To the left are part of the cattle courts. The ground floor of the north wing was designed to house the meal, potato and feed stores plus a small stable with an 'infirmary' next to it, the wright shop, implement store, dairy and turnip house. Crowsteps were very fashionable as a building detail when this steading was built. On the Sutherland estate they appear only at Skelbo and Tongue Mains. Both farms were built on a grand scale as they were home farms tied to a large country estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
