Scope and Content Broch of Mousa, Dunrossness, Shetland The broch of Mousa stands on a low rocky headland on the west side of the island. The broch of Burraland stands opposite on the mainland. It has been cleared out twice in recent times and remains the best-preserved of all the brochs in Scotland. This is a view of the broch of Mousa from the island. The brochs of Mousa and Burraland are on opposite sides of Mousa Sound, apparently guarding it. The broch is mentioned twice in the Orkneyinga Saga where it is called Moseyjarborg. One of these occasions was in 1153AD when it was used by Earl Harald. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
