Scope and Content Annotated and stamped on the mounted print: 'Scottish National Buildings Record. Shire: Argyll. Place: Inveraray Parish. Building: Dubh Loch - Boat House. Photographer: C.H.C. Date: May 1962'. View of boat-house at the Dubh Loch, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This boat-house is situated on the south-west shore of the Dubh Loch, famous in the 18th century for its trout and salmon fishing. The boat-house was built for the Argyll estate in 1751-2 by the local mason, James Potter, at a cost of £39 10s 3d. The boat-house is built of lime-mortared rubble and has pitched gables. It has been re-roofed with slate since this photograph was taken. The segmental-headed archway with a span of 2.9m is on the north wall of the house, facing the loch. The archway, through which the boat would have passed, has iron crooks for double doors. The interior of the boat-house contained water, and stone benches against both side-walls probably supported a raised timber gangway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
