Scope and Content Sheep-dip, Geldie Burn, Mar Lodge Estate, Aberdeenshire When the land was cleared for sheep, new structures were required for sheep-farming, such as large enclosures, shepherd's bothies, small pens and sheep-dips. Two sheep-dips were created beside the Geldie Burn. The heather-filled hollow in the foreground is the dip-tank for a sheep-dip. The original timber run, 16m long, was supported on the double row of stones still visible. The modern fence is on the line of the earlier stock-enclosure. Mar Lodge estate was part of the medieval Earldom of Mar. The Forest of Mar became a hunting reserve in medieval times and was revived as such in the 19th century, after a period of sheep-farming in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
