Scope and Content Gravestone of Robert Smart, Maryton Parish Church and Churchyard, Angus This gravestone features an oval panel carved with the tools of a gardener. These are a rake, shears, curved pruning knife, spade and spool of string to mark out rows of vegetables. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates Robert Smart, who died in 1803. It is inscribed: 'Erected/By David Smart in/memory of his Father/Robert Smart some/time Gadner at Old/Montrose who died 31st/September 1803 aged 61/also his brother Robert/who died 4 April 1779/aged 5 years'.
