Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Peter Steven and Isobel Maltman, Bo'ness churchyard, Falkirk This headstone commemorates Peter Steven, who died in 1747, and his wife Isobel Maltman. Wielding a palm frond and an open book (presumably the Bible), an angel stands over an hourglass and skull, both symbols of death and mortality. This scene signifies the triumph of those faithful to the Word of God over the powers of death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
