Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of seaplane base, Loch Ryan, Dumfries & Galloway Two anchorage and mooring areas are clearly defined in this photograph (1), though no seaplanes are visible. RAF Wig Bay was probably established in 1939 or 1940, serving as the base of the Flying Boat Training Squadron. In 1941, the squadron was the first to be equipped with American-made Catalina seaplanes, and had US Navy instructors seconded to the base. Later in the war RAF Wig Bay became a repair base for all types of seaplanes. By the end of the war almost 200 seaplanes could be seen on Loch Ryan waiting to be scrapped. Taken during aerial reconnaissance by the Luftwaffe in January 1941, this photograph shows RAF Wig Bay, a seaplane base on Loch Ryan. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
