Scope and Content Mural monument commemorating Robert Kirkwood, North Berwick churchyard, East Lothian This monument commemorates Robert Kirkwood, a tenant farmer, who died in 1730 aged 59. Also buried here is Margaret Shiel, his wife, who died in 1759 aged 83. Monuments of this size and quality testify to the wealth of tenant farmers like the Kirkwoods. Reclining on the shoulders of the monument are cherubs, each holding a palm frond, symbolising the immortal soul's victory over death. Unusually, there are three winged cherubs at the top of the central panel, signifying the ascent of the soul to heaven. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
