Scope and Content Table tomb of John Windram, Kinclaven Church and Churchyard, Perth & Kinross This shows the top of the table tomb. In the centre is a winged soul, with finely incised wings. It symbolises the spirit of the dead person ascending to Heaven after death. On each side of the soul are flowers, which may be tulips or lilies, symbols of rebirth. The panel below features a decorative border and the '4' symbol of a merchant, between initials and the date 1740. The number '4' came to symbolise the trade of a merchant after it was used as the mark of the Arms of the Stirling Guildry in the 18th century. Sometimes the '4' features crosses at the ends of the arm and the vertical stroke, and sometimes it is accompanied by the letter 'M', a mark placed on bales of merchandise since medieval times. This table tomb commemorates John Windram, who died in 1740. It is inscribed: 'In memory of JOHN WINDRAM/lawfull on to David Windram/Merchand and baillie in Brechin/who died 4th September 1739 aged 34/He applied himself to his Father's business'.
