Scope and Content Gravestone of John and William Miller, Kinclaven Church and Churchyard, Perth & Kinross This gravestone features an intricately carved 'egg-and-dart' border, with the darts shown as actual arrows, the weapons of Death. At the top of the stone is a winged soul, its wings forming an elegant fan around its smiling face. This represents the spirit of the deceased ascending to Heaven after death. The lower part of the stone features an inverted shield carved with the sock and coulter (metal parts) of a plough, the emblem of a farmer. It is surrounded by scrolling foliage, flowers and grapes, all emblems of rebirth. At the base of the stone is a ribbon inscribed: 'MEMENTO MORI' (remember you must die). The winged souls which feature on the majority of Scottish gravestones vary enormously from place to place, and depending on the skill and imagination of the masons who made them. They represent an attempt to record in stone an image of the human spirit which transcends death. This gravestone commemorates John Miller, who died in 1727, and William Miller, who died in 1746. It is inscribed: 'HERE LYES THE DUST OF JOHN MILLER/HUSBAND TO JEAN STRATTON AND IND/WELLER IN ARENTULLEY WHO DIED/IN NOVEMBER 1727 AGED 60 YEARS/& WILLIAM MILLER HIS SON HUSBAND/TO MARGRET BURNS HE DYED/SEPTR 1746 AGED 45 YEARS/ERECTED BY WILLIAM & ALXR MILLERS/SONS TO THE SAID JAMES MILLER &/THOMAS GEORGE & PATAR SONS TO THE/DECEASED WILLIAM MILLER/Job XI V. But man dieth and Wasteth Away, yea man giveth up the ghost/As the waters fall from the sea And the flood decayeth & drieth up, so man/lieth down and riseth not, till the heavens be no more, they shall not/awake'.
