Administrative History Frank Reece Winstone (1909-1991) was an English photographer from Bristol, he started as a commercial photographer in 1937. After wartime service in the RAF Mobile Field Photographic Section, during which he adopted the name Reece for his professional work, he moved to 23 Hyland Grove, Henbury, Bristol where he had his business and home for the next 40 years. This address is recorded on many of the prints in the collection. Winstone documented the changes in Bristol after the war and published a number of books and gave lectures on 'Bristol as it was', describing his role as 'photographic recorder of Bristol'. In addition to his own photography, more than 43,000 photographs are documented between 1924-1988 mainly of Bristol but also other parts of Britain, he also amassed a large collection of historic photographs of the city. He was a member of the Institute of British Photographers, this is recorded on several of the prints in the collection at HES.
