Scope and Content Former cooperage, boiler house chimney and topiary garden, Tormore Distillery, Highland Tormore was the first new distillery to be built in Scotland in the 20th century. It was designed by architect Sir Albert Richardson, a past president of the Royal Academy and completed in 1960. In 1972 the number of stills was increased from four to eight, and it continues to produce spirit for the Long John blends. This shows the distillery cooperage (a special building originally designed for the construction and maintenance of casks and barrels), and the boiler-house chimney. The walls are harled and painted and have pale grey granite dressings, and the roof features a musical clock under a dome. The gardens include a birdhouse made from an old barrel, and topiary shapes and animals. Jim McBain, the gardener at Tormore, would each year catch the brown trout which lived in the distillery pond and carry them up into the hills to release them in the burn. By the time the pond had been cleaned the fish would have made their way down once more. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
