Administrative History The Royal Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh received its Royal Charter in 1681. Established initially with the aim of promoting the interests of the merchants of the city, over time the Company became responsible for the administration of numerous charitable trusts endowed by merchants and their families: the business of the Company is now dedicated to educational and charitable works. The latter include an enterprise fund, social housing and support of the elderly. It is responsible for the management of endowed schools, comprising: ESMS (a merger of Mary Erskine (1694), the Edinburgh Institution, later Melville College (1832), Daniel Stewart's College (1855)); and George Watson's College (1741), (which incorporates George Watson's Ladies'College (1871), and John Watson's College (1762)). The Company was responsible for James Gillespie's High School (1803) until 1908, when this was transferred to the management of the Edinburgh School Board.
