Description View of Roman altar to Minerva and a smaller altar in the lobby of Burnfoot House, originally presumably found at Birrens Roman fort.

Date 1895

Collection Records of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 354998

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of J 12302 PO

Scope and Content Small black and white photograph of inscribed altar annotated on reverse: 'Proc xxx 153. Large and small altar found at Burnsfoot." A 'highly ornamented' altar was dug up (presumably) at Birrens by Mr Clow of Land in 1810, and for many years after 1813 was used as the pedestal of a sundial at Burnfoot House. It was still in the lobby there in 1895. The photograph shows it in an alcove in a house, with decoration around the alcove, together with a much smaller stone, below the foot of the alcove. A drawing, and two full pages of description, of the stone and its inscription is in PSAS, Vol 30, pp 152-155 (Figs 21, 22, and 23). Signed: 'J Rutherford' The stone is now held in Dumfries Museum. See also DP 192314.
