Scope and Content Small black and white mounted photograph annotated on reverse: 'Hoddam Castle. Proc xxx143.'. A small altar, found at Birrens according to Pennant and seen by him at Hoddam Castle in 1772, where it remained in 1895 when the photograph was taken. A drawing, and full page and a half of description, of the stone and inscription is in PSAS, Vol 30, p 143 (Fig 16). Accompanying envelope, marked 'Photos of alters at Hoddam Castle, from Birrens... '. Addressed to Secretary of Society of Antiquaries. Post-marked London WC; dated Febuary 1905 (?). Now in Dumfries Museum.
