Scope and Content Cowlairs Works, Carlisle Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway as their Glasgow locomotive sheds and maintenance works. After the North British Railway absorbed the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway in 1865 it developed the works as its central workshops, moving the locomotive shed to Eastfield in 1904. This shows the interior of the carriage shop, looking along the length. It is similar in construction to the wagon shop, immediately to the east, with its transverse wrought-iron trusses and cast iron columns, although this building is longer. It appears to date from the extension of the works in about 1870. The North British Railway was Scotland's largest railway, and had several hundred carriages for passengers, as well as luggage and other vans classed as 'coaching stock'. These required regular repair and refitting. Until the 1920s this shop also built new vehicles. It was demolished in 1968. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
