Scope and Content This collection contains information about 1128 engraved rock surfaces in Scotland, United Kingdom. This information was gathered between 2016-2021 by Scotland’s Rock Art Project. This archive includes a) a spreadsheets with grid references, detailed descriptions, and quantitative information on content and context for every engraved rock surface, b) detailed motif analysis spreadsheet created by the project team, c) photographs of rock engravings and their context, d) sketches of identified rock art panels and their locations, e) 3D photogrammetry models, snapshots, raw photogrammetry photographs, and photogrammetry metadata documents for rock art panels. Metadata reports for 3D models have been archived as 'migrated' records alongside zipped folders of 3D models.
Archive History Project data was co-produced during fieldwork by Scotland's Rock Art Project (2016-2021) and community teams. This project data included photographs, digitised sketches, 3D photogrammetry models, and fieldwork notes. This data was deposited with Scotland's Rock Art Project over the duration of the project. Project data was appraised and catalogued by a project archivist between April-December 2021.
System of Arrangement The project archive was created from multiple deposits by community volunteers during Scotland's Rock Art Project. The collection has been arranged into council areas and fieldwork conducted at rock art panel locations. Project data for individual panels are identified using the rock art panel location name followed by a numeric indicator. Each panel arranged into three batches, representing '3D photogrammetry data', 'digital photographs of rock art panel contexts', and 'Scanned images of rock art panel sketches.' Records relating to multiple rock art panels have been under the rock art fieldwork group, and have been indexed according to the sites represented. An export of fieldwork data recorded by community teams has been archived under the collection level record.
Related Material Fieldwork data and rock art panel motif analysis will be deposited with the University of Edinburgh DataShare under the 'Scotland's Rock Art Project' collection. Fieldwork data was also deposited with regional Historic Environment Records. Compressed 3D models were made available on the SketchFab website.
Access Conditions Open. Zipped folders of 3D models and images of 3D models are available for personal non-commercial and educational use only.
Administrative History Scotland's Rock Art Project was directed by Dr Tertia Barnett and hosted by Historic Environment Scotland, in collaboration with Edinburgh University's School of History, Classics and Archaeology, and Glasgow School of Art's School of Simulation and Visualisation. The team worked closely with project partners, including Kilmartin Museum, Archaeology Scotland, and the North of Scotland Archaeological Society, as well as with local communities, heritage professionals, and land managers across Scotland. This project used information from previously recorded rock art panels (i.e. carved rocks) identified in the National Record for the Historic Environment, and also collected information for 250 previously unrecorded rock art panels. The project verified 1080 panels as prehistoric rock art and recorded these in detail in collaboration with twelve trained community teams from across Scotland. Recording involved a standardised methodology that captured quantitative, descriptive and visual data for each rock art panel using a bespoke recording form, hand-held GPS (Global Positioning System accurate to 3-15m) or mobile phone, field sketches of the panel and its location, and 3D models of each panel using Structure from Motion photogrammetry. 3D models were processed from raw images using Agisoft Metashape software, which was also used to produce a metadata report and export files for each 3D model. The project data were then integrated into the NRHE.
Accruals Scotland's Rock Art Project trained volunteers to record and submit additional information about rock art panels not identified during the project. These records will include digital photographs of rock art panels and their contexts, digitised sketches of rock art panels and their locations, and snapshots of 3D models. This is expected on an ad-hoc basis following the close of the project in December 2021.
