Scope and Content Suspension footbridge, Brae Doune, Sutherland This is a very long (97m span) wire rope suspension footbridge over the river Oykel. It is the longest bridge of its type in Scotland. This view shows the bridge from the north east, with its steel truss pylons and light wooden deck with wire mesh railings. Note the poles projecting from the sides of the abutments to provide anchors for wire ropes bracing the deck sideways. This type of bridge with unstiffened deck could be made with longer spans, as here, than the stiffened-deck type introduced in the 1880s, but it was only suited for light traffic, as in this case where the bridge was built for sport fishermen.
