Scope and Content Leamington Lifting Bridge, Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal, Gilmore Park, Edinburgh (Edinburgh City council area) This bridge, unique in Scotland, is of the vertical lift type, electrically operated, and was originally sited further to the east. It was transferred to this site when the original terminal basin of the canal in Edinburgh was filled in in the 1930s. This view shows the bridge from the west. The lifting section is clearly visible, as are the two riveted steel frames within which it was lifted, by the wire ropes which can be seen at each corner of the span. This bridge had been out of use for many years in 1966, but has survived, and was being refurbished as part of the Millennium Link in 2000. The intention is, initially at least, to secure it with the road span raised. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
