Scope and Content Manure Works (Fertiliser Works), Commercial Quay (Provost Blaikie's Quay), Aberdeen In the mid and late 19th century, when the value of phosphates, nitrates and ammonium compounds had been scientifically explained, factories were established in a number of Scottish seaports to make artificial manures. This one was established in 1837 by the Aberdeen Lime Co. This shows the back of the works from the south west. The tall chimney was probably built to serve the boilers which provided steam for an oil-seed crushing plant. By 1970 the works belonged to the Northern Agricultural & Lime Co Ltd, product of an amalgamation of the 1930s. The Aberdeen Lime Co Ltd were in the late 19th century described as ship owners, seed crushers, oil merchants, manufacturers of oil cakes and fertilisers and dealers in feeding stuffs, coal, lime etc. They made oil from linseed and cotton-seed.
