Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Leuchars Airfield, Fife This Luftwaffe aerial photograph shows several key features of RAF Leuchars, despite attempts to camouflage the site, best seen in the two landing strips which are indistinguishable from their surroundings. Attached intelligence notes draw attention to key features such as aircraft hangars (annotated 1 on the photograph), accommodation blocks (4), and ammunition buildings (6). In addition, two radio masts can also be seen (7) situated near the accommodation blocks. Still an operational RAF station today, Leuchars dates from 1911 when the Royal Engineers established a base for their work with balloons. Aircraft were first stationed at Leuchars in 1918, when the Royal Navy built an airfield here. During World War II Leuchars was occupied by several different squadrons. These fulfilled a variety of different purposes such as training units and fighter squadrons, including Dutch, Norwegian and New Zealand units. Taken during aerial reconnaissance by the Luftwaffe in July 1940, this photograph shows the RAF airfield at Leuchars. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
