Scope and Content Recorded on the mounted print: 'Scottish National Buildings Record. Shire: Fife. Place: Pittenweem. Building: West Shore - Rockvilla. Photographer: F.B. Date: July 1963'. Rockvilla, West Shore, Pittenweem, Fife Pittenweem became a burgh of barony dependent on its Augustinian Priory in the 15th century, and a royal burgh in 1541. Appearing in records in 1228, its port harboured a thriving fishing fleet, and was home to merchants trading with the Low Countries. Rockvilla was built in the 18th century. Its east face, shown here, has its original harling. Much Scottish masonry from the later Middle Ages onwards was harled, that is covered with rough-cast cement to protect it from the weather. This would probably have been painted using locally available pigments. The results could be quite colourful. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
