Scope and Content The collection comprises both original material, and photographic copies of material lent for copying as a Survey of a Private Collection. The collection includes: Collection of miscellaneous Scottish drawings; four designs by Robert A N Paterson for an unidentified house; sketches of decorative ironwork, six student drawings by William Glashan, 1921-25. Two designs for stained glass windows by W F Clokey and Co. Ltd, Belfast. NMRS Survey of a Private Collection. A framed drawing of a design by John A R Inglis for a provincial market hall, which won a Soane Medallion in 1897; the prize included £100 for a travelling scholarship. Ordnance Survey map annotated and highlighted to depict the extent of the Hamilton Estates. Component 1 ; Survey of Private Collection. A collection of drawings and engravings of buildings throughout Scotland, including a landscape by Robert Adam, a competition entry design for the Usher Hall, Edinburgh, c1910; a drawing of Melrose Abbey, Scottish Borders, by Alexander Naismith, and a watercolour of Philorth House, Banff and Buchan. Photographic record of the sundials and stones at Birkinshaw, Traquair.
Archive History A collection of material acquired by Dr Nicholas Haynes, and donated or lent for copying by him to RCAHMS and HES. The collection comprises: Acc No 1995/58, miscellaneous drawings; Acc No 1999/233, copied as a survey of a private collection, a design by J A R Inglis; Acc No 2005/103 OS maps of the Hamilton Estates; Acc No 2008/99, a survey of a private collection; Acc No 2008/111, survey of a private collection, drawings and engravings; Acc No 2011/95, a digital photographic record of Birkinshaw.

Administrative History Dr Nicholas Haynes, architectural historian and consultant, active c.1990 onwards. Author of numerous books and articles, including: Building Knowledge: an architectural history of the University of Glasgow (2013), and (with C B Fenton) Building Knowledge: an architectural history of the University of Edinburgh (2017), and the RIAS guide to Perth and Kinross.
