Scope and Content This image provides a close-up view of Fort George (built 1747-1769), which is described as "a unique and the most complete example of 18th century military architecture" (HER). In addition to the fortification itself, the site includes contemporaneous barracks and church (at the point of land), and a 20th-C war memorial. A seaplane base, located near the pond, operated there during WW1. During the fort's construction a Bronze Age barrow was removed. The line of the 18th-C military road from Inverness is followed by the existing road from Ardersier to the fort. A fish trap is recorded on the shoreline S of the fort. Beyond the fort, firing ranges extend to Delnies Wood. At top centre of image is the old parish church of Ardersier at Kirkton, with its burial ground and watch house. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
