Scope and Content This image provides a useful overview of the coastline between Fort George and Ardersier. Fort George (built 1747-1769) is described as "a unique and the most complete example of 18th century military architecture" (HER). In addition to the fortification itself, the site includes a contemporaneous church and barracks, and a 20th-C war memorial. A seaplane base operated there during WW1. During the fort's construction a Bronze Age barrow was removed. The line of the 18th-C military road from Inverness is followed by the existing road from Ardersier to the fort. The shoreline between Fort George and Ardersier includes 3 recorded fish traps. The settlement of Ardersier, formerly known as Campbelltown, was licensed as a Burgh of Barony in 1623. At the nearest end of the tree-covered former coastal slope above the village, there is a possible motte, the Cromal Mount. At the far end of the village, just beyond the local authority housing which is set round a green space, is a field known as the Dalyards, formerly Templars' Lands.
