Scope and Content The A9 between Inverness and Perth was substantially upgraded in the 1970s, bypassing the communities on the route. At Inverness the route was altered significantly to cross the Moray Firth by the Kessock Bridge which was opened in 1982. This shortened the route to the north by 14 miles. This view shows the road as it takes a more direct route south up Drumossie Brae. The Raigmore Cairn was excavated and re-erected in 1973. It was originally on a site now covered by the slip road going south. Inverness lies to the right and out of picture. The development on the eastern side of Inverness along the A96, dubbed the Golden Mile, is on the left. Stoneyfield Business Park is in the centre with the Inverness Retail Park, built at Wester Seafield and opened in 1996, at centre left. Within the Business Park is Stoneyfield House, built in 1780, and the Coach House, a well-known local restaurant. The UHI campus at Beechwood Farm, opened in 2015, is above the Business Park. An excavation was carried out in advance of development in the area of the Retail Park and the Campus and prehistoric remains were uncovered. Cradlehall is at top left. The saltmarsh on the Longman is at the bottom of the picture. Much of the land at this point has been reclaimed.
