Scope and Content This is a view of the UHI campus at Beechwood with Raigmore Hospital in the background. UHI Project was created in 1992, comprising 13 Colleges of Further Education in Highland, Moray and Perthshire and in 2010 it was decided to relocate to a site at Beechwood Farm, which was built in the C19 and raised bulls for breeding purposes but was identified in 2010 as a suitable site for a new campus. In 2011 UHI was awarded university status as the University of the Highlands and Islands and the campus building was opened in 2015. Investigation ahead of development identified prehistoric remains. Raigmore Hospital began as a facility under the Emergency Medical Scheme and took its first patients in 1941. Wards were built of brick in separate blocks on the grounds of the Raigmore Estate. In 1962 plans for a new general hospital to serve Inverness were put in place and Phase 1 incorporating the Outpatients Department, laboratories, pharmacy and records, was completed in 1971. Phase 2 was opened in 1985, providing wards to replace the old blocks. A maternity unit was built on the site of the original wards in 1988. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
