Description An oblique aerial view of Avoch, Fortrose and the Black Isle, looking NNE.

Date 8/4/2015

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 343540

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The fishing village of Avoch developed in the lea of Ormond Castle, a medieval castle first built by William the Lion as a border fortress between the lands of Scotia and the Norse in Sutherland. The remains of the castle are on a mound at bottom R. The initial fishing village of Avoch developed along the shore, and was then superseded in the C19 by Bridge Street and High Street set further up the slope, now containing the main shops, church and hotels. The fine Congregational church is in the centre of the village, with the manse to its L. The photo looks down the length of the Black Isle, with Chanonry Point sticking out into the Moray Firth, almost bisecting the image. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
